Buddhist Meditation

Explain two different Buddhist meditation practices. [4 marks]

One Buddhist meditation practice is samatha meditation.

This helps Buddhists to develop intense focus — the ability to bring 100% of their attention to bear on something without getting distracted.

Another meditation practice is vipassana meditation.

This is ‘insight meditation’: when Buddhists bring their attention to bear on their own thoughts and physical sensations, to try and understand the true nature of reality.
