The Three Marks of Existence

Explain TWO ways in which the Three Marks of Existence influence Buddhists today. [4 marks]

One of the Three Marks of Existence is dukkha (‘suffering’ or ‘dissatisfaction’).

Dukkha inspires Buddhists to study the dhamma (the Buddha’s teachings) and try to reach enlightenment.

They believe that only by doing so can they be liberated from dukkha.

Another Mark of Existence is anicca (‘impermanence’).

Anicca motivates Buddhists to avoid attachments to people, places, and things.

Everything eventually ends.

If a person gets attached to impermanent things, they will experience dukkha when those things end.
