Christianity
Most Christians believe that theft is a sin.
The Ten Commandments clearly state ‘You shall not steal’ (Exodus 20. 15).
They argue that if a person has committed theft, they should return the stolen property to its original owner and ask for their forgiveness.
Islam
Most Muslims also believe that theft is a sin.
The Qur’an even says ‘As for male and female thieves, cut off their hands for what they have done — a deterrent from Allah’ (5. 38).
However, Muslim scholars also recognise that in extreme poverty, people might have no choice but to steal.
In these cases, this punishment would not be used.
Buddhism
Most Buddhists believe theft is an unskilful act.
The Buddha teaches ‘One who destroys life, utters lies, takes what is not given, goes to another man’s wife, and is addicted to intoxicating drinks — such a man digs up his own root even in this world’ (Dhammapada 246–247).
They argue that stealing makes it more difficult to get enlightened, and leaves a person trapped in the cycle of rebirth (samsara).
